About Blood Pressure Medications

Blood pressure medications come in different forms and each is intended to cause a different reaction in the blood or blood vessels. An ace inhibitor is one such medication used in the treatment of hypertension.

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors prevent the manufacture of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes blood vessels narrower. When the hormone production is blocked, the arteries remain wider and allow blood to flow through with less pressure on the vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.

Brand Names for Ace Inhibitors

Benazepril, Enalapril and Lisinopril are three ACE inhibitors commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. They are seldom the first course of action but are used to treat the more severe cases of hypertension. Ideally, maintaining a proper weight and eating right are the best ways to control blood pressure. After that a diuretic type of medication may be prescribed, which works based on the idea of flushing the arteries so pressure is reduced.

The brand names under which the common ACE inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure are sold are Lotensin (benazepril), Vasotec (enalapril) and Prinivil and Zestril (lisinopril). All of these work to increase blood flow by keeping the arteries open and wide.

Possible Side Effects of ACE Inhibitors Blood Pressure Medications

ACE inhibitors have side effects just like any other drugs. It can feel as if you have a bad cold because many of the symptoms that are possible are a cough, sore throat, fever, and mouth sores. Other symptoms include an itchy, red skin rash, swelling of the neck, face or tongue, or a salty or metallic taste in your mouth. While all of these are not extremely common, they have been reported in enough cases to be listed as possible side effects to taking ACE inhibitors.

One side effect is raised potassium levels. Some medications, such as diuretics, actually reduce potassium and that has some health risks with it as well. The opposite is true of ACE inhibitors. Because they can raise potassium levels it is important to have yours monitored if you are taking any of these prescriptions. Symptoms of too much potassium in the blood stream include nervousness, a numbness or tingling feeling in the hands or feet, and even confusion. There can also be difficulty breathing.

It is important to watch what you eat and what you do while taking ACE inhibitors. Some foods which contain potassium, such as salt substitutes can cause you to have dangerously high levels of potassium. Also, taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve or aspirin can negate the effects of your ACE inhibitor drug.

Challenges of controlling Blood Pressure

The challenge in controlling blood pressure with medicine is two-fold. Medical professionals will try the least invasive type of drug, meaning one with the least chance of side effects and that requires the lowest dose possible to manage your blood pressure. This means that a patient can often go through years of trial and error type of drug experimentation before finding something that works. Meanwhile, blood pressure can be going untreated.

Secondly, medications to treat blood pressure have side effects – all of them to some degree. You may find that using them requires you to take other medications to treat the symptoms of the side effects.

As with any disease or condition, a natural approach can be just as effective, without the risk of side effects. A doctor can help you determine if you need to lose weight or make other changes to control your blood pressure.

Are you currently taking medicine for your blood pressure? Do you take other medication as well? Remembering to take any medicine can be a hassle to some people especially if you have to take more than one at a time. Here are a few things that might help you remember because it is very important you do not forget to take your blood pressure medication.

Some people purchase little pill boxes that help you organize your pills. You can purchase pill boxes that have one for every day of the week. You put all the pills you need to take into each box for each day. You can purchase these almost anywhere and they do come in handy for those that are forgetful.

If you take medicine regularly you might try keeping it on your bathroom sink. When you finish getting ready or even just brushing your teeth, you can take your medicine. Have your blood pressure medicine and any other medication that you have to take right there. This is a great easy reminder.

Get into a routine. Taking your blood pressure pills at the same time every day will eventually get you in the habit and you won’t forget. If you have to take your medicine with food you could always take them every day with your lunch. Getting in the habit of this is a great way to never forget your blood pressure pills again.

There are many people that put notes everywhere to remind them to do something. Taking your blood pressure medicine is no different. Put up a note on your fridge or on your computer at work. Every other day or every week change the color of the note and place it in a different spot; on the phone, the mirror, the fridge, wherever you will see it.

A really great way to remember to take your blood pressure medicine is to make your own little personal chart. Try to use different color pens or pencils if you have different medications to take. This is a very neat and organized way to keep track and to help you remember.

If none of these would work for you, try having a friend or relative give you a quick call during the day to remind you. While this might sound effective it may not work as well for some. If you take your blood pressure medicine while you are on the phone with them it can be very helpful. If they just call to tell you and then you hang up, you might forget in that time.

If you have a computer and are savvy enough you could set up a reminder. You can also find free services that will do this for you and send you a reminder email. Have it tell you to take your blood pressure and have it repeat until you have taken it and then delete it. Make it do this daily and you will remember to take your blood pressure medicine.

You can easily come up with your own creative ways of remembering to take your blood pressure medication. Try a few different ways and see what works best for you. Once you get into a routine of taking it you shouldn’t have a problem remembering to take it.

High blood pressure is a very serious disease which can cause large amounts of damage to your body’s vital organs. The first step is to diagnose whether or not you have high blood pressure. Although there are a number of signs you can look out for, the quickest and most accurate method is to go and see your doctor and get tested for high blood pressure. If this reveals that you do have high blood pressure the next step is to go about managing your condition.

The first step to <a href="http://www.aclepsa.com/minipress.shtml?id=7376>combatting high blood pressure is by taking the appropriate prescription medication which your doctor recommends. Anti-hypertensive drugs are often prescribed to help reduce high blood pressure, often alongside alpha blockers and beta blockers. In emergency situations medication may be prescribed that lowers blood pressure suddenly, but this practice is very dangerous. Before you even consider taking any medication be sure to consult a trained doctor and seek advice.

Using medication is just one of many ways you can manage high blood pressure. Improving your diet can help reduce blood pressure. A poor diet leads to the insides of your veins and arteries being coated in a layer of fat which increases the pressure of your blood. Consuming extra fruit and vegetables will help because they contain high amounts of fibre, vitamins and minerals. High blood pressure can also be caused by chronic dehydration and as many of us know alcohol causes dehydration (hence why you often want another beer, then another beer etc). Therefore, consuming high amounts of water and lowering your alcohol intake will keep you hydrated and decrease the risk of <a href="http://www.aclepsa.com/hytrin.shtml?id=7376>high blood pressure. Although it is a good idea to make positive changes to your diet, this is best done under the supervision of a trained dietician or your doctor. Be sure to consult with your dietician or doctor prior to making any serious changes to your diet.

Improving your lifestyle will also help lower your blood pressure. A daily exercise routine and/or yoga routine should help reduce your body fat and therefore lower your blood pressure. Before embarking on an exercise routine you take the advice of a personal trainer and have them forumlate an exercise plan for you. If you smoke, cutting down can yield positive results. Smoking releases chemicals into your body which make your blood vessels sticky and causes fatty deposits to collect in the arteries. Furthermore, smoking can cause your arteries and veins to shrink which will increase your blood pressure.

You can also try natural remedies which include aromatherapy, herbs and yoga. With aromatherapy you should choose oils which have a soothing effect and relax your muscles including rose, lavender and cypress. Herbal remedies, such as stinging nettles and lemon balm, can also help lower your blood pressure. Finally, yoga may help you relax and thereforelower your blood pressure.

In conclusion, you should first seek the advice of your doctor before attempting to treat your high blood pressure. If medication is required then they will let you know. However, making improvements to your diet and lifestyle, or even trying some natural remedies can assist you greatly in combatting high blood pressure.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the principal cause of premature death in the United Kingdom, United States, and many other Western Countries. Statistics published by the British Heart Foundation indicate that it is the primary cause of mortality listed in more than one in three death certificates (36%) in the United Kingdom. Similarly, historical information from the American Heart Association from 2004, concludes that over 79 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease. The statistics are truly amazing – In the UK, around 227,000 people suffer a heart attack each year. Someone has a heart attack every two minutes, and in about 30% of heart attacks, the patients die. This represents over 68,000 deaths annually in the UK alone, or the equivalent of 1,300 Boeing 747 crashes with no survivors!

The term cardiovascular covers two distinct and separate aspects of the disease; coronary heart disease (which may lead to a heart attack or myocardial infarction) and stroke.

Risk Factors

There are extensive clinical and statistical studies which indicate that there are certain factors which significantly increase the risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack. These are known as major risk factors.

There are two different types of major risk factors – those that can, and those that cannot be changed or ameliorated by lifestyle changes.

The major risks that cannot be altered or modified include aging, gender, and hereditary genetic disposition. Alternatively there are many major risk factors which can be treated or improved by various methods which the individual, in conjunction with their healthcare provider, can instigate. These risks include use of tobacco products, high blood cholesterol, lack of physical exercise, obesity, and high blood pressure. The remainder of this article will focus on treatment of the latter.

The dangers of high blood pressure (hypertension)

High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer”, due to its lack of overtly obvious external symptoms. However it quietly carries out its stealth attack on the body’s vital organs damaging them for years before symptoms develop. Left undiagnosed and uncontrolled, it can cause disability, a poor quality of life or even death from a fatal heart attack. The management of high blood pressure is therefore a key defence in the battle against heart disease.

When the body absorbs too much salt through excessive intake, this can cause a deterioration in health through a variety of conditions, principally through raised blood pressure (hypertension), but also for example through kidney problems. Hyzaar is a drug that prevents fluid retention in the body’s tissues, which explain its colloquial designation as a “water pill”.

Information about Hyzaar Blood Pressure Medication

Hyzaar medication is a combination medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It consists of two separate drugs that are blended together. These are:-

Losartan

Hydrochlorothiazide

Losartan belongs to a contemporary class of blood pressure medications that prevents the hormone angiotensin II from contracting the blood vessels. This in turn allows blood to flow more efficiently, which can assist with maintaining control over the patient’s blood pressure.Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that increases the elimination of urine, which has the overall effect of removing fluid from the body and as a result, the patient’s blood pressure is lowered.
