Emory University Hospital continues its strong commitment of addressing heart disease before its development by guiding patients to a healthier way of life for themselves and the ones they love. In pursuit of this goal, Emory University now offers a comprehensive Preventive Cardiology Clinic at The Emory Heart & Vascular Center.

All those with a history of heart attacks in their family, high blood pressure, obesity, little or no exercise or high cholesterol levels, are very likely candidates at risk of a heart attack. Cardiac rehabilitation is the best form of prevention and is the key to halting the number one killer of Americans. For existing heart patients, cardiac rehabilitation is designed to improve their overall physical and mental functioning. And help them recover quickly.

Emory University Hospital offers a variety of programs designed for those who are at risk for heart disease, or may already have it, or simply want to learn more about it. Extensive information is available on Emory’s website on these programs including classes and other informative links on how one can start getting healthier today. High risk individuals should call 404-778-2850 at Emory immediately to schedule the most important doctor’s appointment of their life.

Counseling is an integral part of any successful cardiac rehabilitation program. At Emory Cardiac and Vascular Center, counseling provides the patient with an understanding of heart disease and with ways to properly manage it. Additionally, counseling on nutrition and the appropriate use of medications is provided.

With counseling, a patient is helped in modifying risk factors, such as high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure and others. At Emory Heart and Vascular, programs include the means to beginning an exercise program, supplying information on physical limitations and lending emotional support to the patient.

Cardiac rehabilitation is not only worthwhile in the prevention of heart disease, but it may also help in managing diabetes, particular types of cancer, osteoporosis in women and even chronic low back pain. Even those who are not at risk may find the information useful for losing weight, boosting energy, and promoting overall good health.

The Emory Heart & Vascular Center is committed to providing clinically excellent cardiovascular patient care, promoting overall heart health, pioneering innovative clinical research, and training the best heart specialists in the world. The Center is consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top heart and cardiovascular health centers in the country.
Most people have no idea what blood pressure really is. This lack of knowledge could potentially lead to serious health complications, stroke, heart attack and even death. The term “silent killer” is an appropriately descriptive reference to high blood pressure, otherwise known as <a href="http://www.aclepsa.com/atacand.shtml?id=7376>hypertension.The sad fact is that just a little knowledge is all it takes to be ready to take action to prevent high blood pressure, or to reduce the damage high blood pressure causes.

The short and sweet definition of blood pressure is that it is the force of your blood flow pounding against your artery walls. If you imagine a water hose, the higher the pressure on the actual waterhose itself and the more likely it is to weaken or spring a leak. The same process takes place with your blood within your arteries.

When a doctor or nurse checks your blood pressure they are looking for two readings. These two readings are usually shown as two numbers which look almost like a weird fraction. Normal blood pressure would be depicted as “120/80.” The first number is called your systolic pressure. When your heart beats and sends blood out into your arteries, the pressure exerted is called your systolic blood pressure. It is the temporary pressure exerted when your blood is pumped.

The second number is referred to as your diastolic pressure. This is the pressure in your arteries as your heart rests between beasts. This number will obviously be lower than your systolic pressure.

A blood pressure reading considered normal would be about 120/80 or lower. A reading of 140/90 or higher would be considered high blood pressure although doctors in different countries have slightly different views on what constitutes low, normal and high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure then you are at greater risk of having a stroke, heart and kidney disease and heart attack. It can be life saving to reduce your blood pressure in that case.

The list of factors that can cause high blood pressure is a long one. It includes physical inactivity, tobacco smoking and alcohol use, excessive stress and a poor diet. It is also common that some medical conditions and even some medications can cause or contribute to <a href="http://www.aclepsa.com/hytrin.shtml?id=7376>high blood pressure, also called hypertension.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a top cause of strokes. The reason is that the high pressure inside your arteries can actually cause blood vessels to break and/or blood clots to form. This could interfere with blood and oxygen flow to the brain or cause a vein to burst in your brain. That is how strokes occur.

A related symptom of the problem can be seen when hypertension causes a blood vessel in your eyes to burst, or bleed. Your vision will be blurred, as you would expect, but in severe cases it can leave you blind. In addition, long term hypertension causes deterioration of your eyesite.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a primary cause of heart attacks. Your arteries carry oxygenated blood from your lungs to your heart muscle. If your heart does not get sufficient oxygen you may notice chest pains and constriction. If the blood flow is blocked you will suffer a heart attack.

The list of problems goes on. Congestive Heart Failure occurs in people with high blood pressure. Congestive Heart Failure is a very serious condition which occurs when your heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to keep your body alive.

Although it can be very frightening to read all the problems associated with high blood pressure, it is never too late to to take action and do something about it. More importantly, it is never too early to do something about it. Children even develop high blood pressure, so early prevention is vital. As you get older you are more likely to develop higher blood pressure. However, there is no reason to accept hypertension as a fact of life.

Racial and ethnic background may also make a difference in how likely you are to develop high blood pressure. Certain groups are known to be more at risk.

Being overweight is a significant factor in high blood pressure. In addition to all the other problems overweight causes, you have a much higher risk of high blood pressure, heart diseases, strokes. Losing weight usually helps to lower blood pressure and if you are overweight you should definitely have your blood pressure measured as soon as possible.
There are many reasons to maintain a healthy diet. But it is a great first step to <a href="http://www.aclepsa.com/coversyl.shtml?id=7376>controlling your blood pressure.

You should be very careful to control your intake of sodium since a direct relation exists between sodium or salt intake and increases in blood pressure. If you check the the ingredients listed on processed foods you will likely be very surprised just how much salt you take in. Try also to increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Whenever you visit your doctor, or go to the pharmacy have your blood pressure checked. It takes only a few seconds and is an important method of protecting your health. It is also relatively easy to measure your blood pressure at home these days with convenient home blood pressure monitors. You may want to ask your doctor to teach you how to monitor your blood pressure at home, to make sure you get a reliable reading.

Keep a journal of your blood pressure readings. You will be able to determine when something has affected your blood pressure adversely. That way, you get early warning so you can avoid long term damage.
If lifestyle changes are not proving effective, speak to your doctor. You may need to consider blood pressure medication. Your doctor will advise you the best option for your particular situation.

Remember, in most cases high blood pressure can be lowered with natural options. If you really want to avoid this silent killer, it pays to get as much information on natural treatments, including weight loss.

Apart from regular aerobic exercises, heart patients can now even go for a light to moderate weight training. American Heart Association has even approved weight training for patients with a variety of heart diseases and ailments. Some of the benefits of weight training include improving muscle strength, reducing resting blood pressure, developing bone density, decreasing fat levels inside the body, reducing stress and even reducing insulin resistance.

Weight training should not be vigorous for heart patients. One can start with light weights of 1-2 pounds each. Weight training will be more useful with more number of repetitions using less weight than less number of repetitions using heavy weights. One should start with 8-12 repetitions per set and can gradually increase. Lifting weights has to be done in a rhythmic manner at moderate to slow speed. Inhalation and exhalation of breath should be properly controlled.

It is important not to hold breath. One should exhale during contraction phase and inhale during relaxation phase. Weight training for 2 days a week would be sufficient for a heart patient. Some important weight training exercises include chest press, shoulder press, triceps extension, biceps, curl, pull-down, lower back extension, abdominal crunch, leg press, leg curl and calf raise. However, all the exercises should be performed under the supervision of a properly trained and certified physical trainer.

Even though weight training offers valuable benefits for the health of heart patients, it is not recommended for people with certain heart ailments. As per instructions of the American Heart Association, weight training is not recommended for patients suffering from unstable coronary heart diseases like angina. Even patients suffering from ailments like congestive heart failure, Marfan syndrome and aortic dissection should not try weight training. Weight training is also dangerous for patients with severe pulmonary hypertension, severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, acute infection of the heart or in the tissues surrounding heart, and patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

It is said that around 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur one’s residence and are witnessed by family members who are often not well equipped with the necessary equipment and skills to attend to the victim.

Sudden cardiac arrests victims require immediate medical attention (within four minutes, or in fact, as soon as possible) to avoid disabilities (such as stroke) and in the worst case, sudden death. Sudden cardiac arrest is a form of Cardiac Arrhythmia and it is a serious if not lethal consequence of Arrhythmia. Arrhythmia generally refers to the irregular and uncoordinated contraction of the cardiac muscle of the ventricles in the heart. Do note that heart attack is another form of cardiovascular condition, and should not be confused with Arrhythmia.

Therefore it is important for you and at least someone else in your family who understands the severity of sudden cardiac arrests and the required treatment, (CPR) Cardiopulmonary resuscitation coupled with defibrillation, and the use of (AED) Automatic External Defibrillator.

As far till this date, it is a important treatment process for sudden cardiac arrests. A defibrillator or an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is made up of a main unit usually with an interface and is accompanied by a pair of two electrodes. The electrodes are placed directly on or in the victim, depending on the type being used. For AED, the electrodes appear in the form of pads which have to be placed to the bare chest of the victim, at different positions on the torso of the victim.

Rapid advancement in technology has seen the rise in the availability for home use much more common. Many commercial firms now have external ones installed in their office premises and are also distributing home defibrillator to employees who suffer from heart related diseases. With the increase in the availability of home defibrillator, many families have been able to protect the lives of their loved ones that might have otherwise been lost due to the lack of this essential medical equipment.

A fully automatic one requires little training from the user, and instructions would most likely be available on usage or included inside the package. However, if you are still concerned, it is always advisable to seek advice from trained medical personnel or read up more.

Do you or your loved one have a heart disease that would merit purchasing a defibrillator? If so, do consider purchasing an automatic external defibrillator as soon as possible. It could one day come in useful when the unforeseen occurs. Only with good health can one truly enjoy his life to the fullest.

Take action to protect your loved ones. Many lives have been lost not to cardiac arrest, but the lack of information and action by people.
